Prairie habitat

This habitat is typified by open natural grasslands with little cover apart from occasional clusters of trees or small rocky outcrops. The root networks of grasses that occur here make the earth easier to burrow so this allows animals to seek shelter below ground.

These regions may have periods of heavy rainfall creating seasonal rivers that flow for a while before drying out completely during the rest of the year. Temperatures here during the day can be high during the summer months but not as harsh as the three previous habitat examples.

Night time temperatures fall pretty low, but again, not as harshly as those before. This region experiences significant seasonality and it is common for a certain amount of frost or even snow to be on the ground during the winter. Animals here would be forced to brumate (hibernate) throughout this period.
