Chapparal and scrub habitat

These rocky exposed areas are peppered with areas of sparse desert grasses and soil and sand mixes, and you’ll often see water storing plants such as cacti here too. There is a greater range of cover for animals and opportunities to use gaps in rock formations to both hide from the heat of the day and be protected from the depth of cold at night. There would be some varying seasonality throughout the year in this habitat, but temperatures will rarely reach freezing point. We know this because most cacti cannot freeze without killing them. Winter lows of 4–10 Celsius are expected.
