Montane habitat
Even mountain sides and plateaus are not off limits to some hardy species of reptile. The extreme elevation of these regions, often in excess of 1000m above sea level, means the day time high temperatures are reduced. However, it is worth noting that UV exposure in this type of habitat will remain high. Night time temperatures will plummet and animals will seek out deep fissures and cave networks to escape these harsh changes in temperature. Depending on which part of the mountain the animal lives they may even spend time within cloud line, rather than beneath them, and this too can have a marked cooling effect on the reptiles’ local environment.
