Task forces
Ask the experts
We don’t rely on a fixed committee or board to decide every technical issue. Reptile and amphibian keeping covers such a huge range of species, subjects and disciplines that a small group of people cannot realistically have the right expertise for every topic.
Instead, we speak to specialists, listen to their views, compare evidence and experience, and then make the final decision based on their counsel. We are responsible for the content we publish and the positions we take.
Who do we speak to?
Our existing network is usually our first port of call, but we also often seek advice from new people where they have useful knowledge, practical experience and the right attitude. We want to work with people who are helpful, honest, practical and focused on producing something useful. Knowing your stuff and being easy to work with are the two most important criteria.
RRK values evidence, research, data and expert knowledge. We also recognise that long-term practical experience has real value, especially in areas where formal research is limited.
Why do we work this way?
We’re interested in what works. The RRK task forces focus on practical, achievable actions that improve reptile and amphibian welfare, and support responsible keeping. We don’t want endless problem spotting without also creating a sensible way forward. Good task force members understand the issue, explain the reality on the ground, and work with others to find a practical solution that puts responsible reptile keeping first.
Members of RRK task forces are expected to:
bring relevant knowledge, experience or expertise to the subject being discussed.
work respectfully with other members, even when views differ.
focus on useful outcomes.
help identify practical solutions that promote responsible reptile and amphibian keeping.
base contributions on evidence, experience, expertise or clear reasoning.
be willing to consider new information and adjust their view when appropriate.
complete agreed actions where possible and respond within a reasonable time.
be clear and honest about any actual or potential conflicts of interest.
represent the work of the task force accurately when speaking to others.
support agreed outcomes, even where compromise has been needed.
Our goal is simple:
bring together the right people, use the best available knowledge, and create clear, practical resources that support responsible reptile and amphibian keeping.
